Identification Tags
Identification tags are used worldwide to help researchers easily track individuals and make more accurate population estimates. Tags enable identification from a distance so that disturbance can be minimised. Pakake/ New Zealand sea lion pups are tagged by researchers throughout their range.
The trust works closely with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to 'mark' and monitor pakake around Ōtepoti/Dunedin. This work provides information on the number and movements of pakake in this area. This helps to build knowledge about how many pakake born around Ōtepoti are surviving and how they utilise local habitats.
